What your coffee order says about your personality

Coffee

We take a look at the psychology behind your daily caffeine fix.

It turns out there might actually be something in those “what does your coffee order say about your personality?” quizzes.

While science can’t confirm that skim lattes make you #basic, or that cappuccinos are daggy, research has indicated that black coffee drinkers are more likely to be psychopaths.

Um, what?

An article published by research journal Appetite examined the link between bitter taste preferences (including black coffee) and antisocial personality traits by canvassing taste preferences and personality profiles in 953 Americans.

“The results of both studies confirmed the hypothesis that bitter taste preferences are positively associated with malevolent personality traits, with the most robust relation to everyday sadism and psychopathy,” the manuscript said.

Just something casual to bring up on your next coffee date, really.

Different types of food (and their flavor profiles) can affect your feelings and emotions in different ways, the study also found.

So before raising an eyebrow when your mate asks for a dash of caramel syrup, consider this: “sweet taste experiences increased self-reported agreeableness and the intention to help and decreased death anxiety, whereas bitter taste experiences were shown to elicit harsher moral judgments and interpersonal hostility.”

We’re still waiting for the research about what paleo-favourite bulletproof coffee (espresso with butter and MCT oil) says about your personality, but feel free to take a guess.
