Meet the restaurant bringing back the lazy susan

Jason Atherton has launched his new tableware collection and it's just as slick as his dinner service reports, George Epaminondas.

The Lazy Susan, that kitsch relic from old-school Chinese restaurants, I Love Lucy, and ’70s dinner parties, has been given a tasteful new spin. The revolving tray, which blissfully delivers morsels to your fingertips, is a signature piece in Jason Atherton’s elegant tableware collection.

“It’s a great multipurpose design and a bit of fun,” enthuses Atherton, the British chef with an empire on which the sun never sets.“You can also dismantle it and use it as a beautiful marble platter,” he adds. The range, dubbed “Social”, is based on the idea of sharing food in a more fluid manner. That translates as deep plates, generous bowls and space-saving wood risers. The neutral collection, in minimal white with a subtle blue-grey speckle, is a collaboration with acclaimed product designer Robin Levien.

“I’m so proud of it,” says Atherton. “Australians love sharing meals family-style at home, just as much as us Brits, so I’m thrilled my collection is going to be available at Myer.”

Chef-approved home items have been with us for decades, but many of them seem to disappear as quickly as they’re hatched. Atherton, though, has proved himself an astute businessman with a flair for longevity. His restaurant count now stands at 15, and stretches from London to New York, Shanghai to Cebu. Earlier this year, he opened Kensington Street Social in Sydney.

What unites the far-flung eateries is the chef’s penchant for sleek design, local seasonality and culinary playfulness. One of the signature dishes at KSS is the “Social dog” appetiser, a highbrow hot dog with a pork and fennel sausage, green apple, black pudding, cheddar and mustard.

Asked to nominate the tastiest dish he’s consumed lately, Atherton cites the hors d’oeuvres styled like washing on a Hills hoist at George Calombaris’s Press Club in Melbourne. “They were cool and modern at the same time,” he says.

The range is available at the new Myer Warringah store and myer.com.au from Thursday.
