It’s been dubbed #nutellagate
The mantra ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ is evidently not one followed by Nutella. The beloved hazelnut spread’s creators Ferrero have confirmed that there has been a major change to the long-used recipe for the brand.
Specifically, the company has cut down on its cocoa use, predominantly as a way to save money on the most expensive ingredient. It has upped the ante instead on its powdered skim milk usage – raising levels from 7.5 to 8.7 percent – and has increased its sugar content from 55.9 to 56.3 percent. The result is a slightly lighter shade of Nutella, but one that tastes just as good as the original according to Ferrero.
“The quality, the sourcing and all other aspects of Nutella ingredients remain the same,” Ferrero commented. “The ingredients list is, as usual, displayed on the jar and on the Nutella webpage. All relevant aspects, from a diet perspective, are the same.”
Nevertheless, the move has been met with controversy online. It seems there are both concerns surrounding both health and flavour that fall nothing short of an outrage.
