They know exactly what they're doing.

Look, there’s every chance that we’re being targeted but as far as we’re concerned, Philadelphia’s new ready-made cream cheese frosting is taking over our feeds, our minds, and our hearts.

The rich, tangy cheese is a staple of breakfast bagels, and cheesecakes and the icing is the best thing to happen to carrot cake since the box grater – and now you’re telling us we can get that good, good stuff in a one-pound (453g) tub? Get outta here.

In a statement provided to Business Wire, the company illustrated the lengths its team went to to create the perfect refrigerated cream cheese frosting. “The culinary team at Philadelphia spent a year and a half carefully crafting a recipe that lives up to The Philadelphia Standard and mirrors the taste of homemade frosting to uplevel any treat.”

The resulting spread is a luxurious creamy texture, “with a sweet and tangy balanced taste to satisfy cravings no matter the occasion.”

The company recommends serving the frosting with cakes, cookies, biscuits or fruit, then says what we’re all thinking: “You can even enjoy it by the spoonful…we won’t judge!”

The Philadelphia Original Cream Cheese Frosting has just dropped in the US so we’ve got our fingers crossed we’ll find it in our supermarkets sooner rather than later. In the meantime…

How to make cream cheese frosting

Ingredients

  • 125g cream cheese, softened
  • 125g unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups (240g) pure icing sugar, sifted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Method

  1. Place butter in the bowl of a stand mixer with the paddle attachment. Beat on high speed for 2 minutes, scraping down side of bowl occasionally, until pale and fluffy.
  2. Add cream cheese and beat on medium-high speed until well combined. Add half the icing sugar and vanilla. Beat on medium speed until smooth and combined, then add remaining icing sugar and beat until well combined. Use as required.
