Falling off the meat-free wagon is more common than you may think.
Meat-reduction may be on the rise but that doesn’t mean that devoted vegetarianism is without those who fall off the wagon from time to time.
According to Esquire UK, there’s a surprising amount of vegetarians who switch teams once they have had a drink. In a survey by VoucherCodesPro of 1789 British vegetarians, 37 percent admitted to having eaten meat when drunk. 34 percent even claimed that they did this every time they were drunk. There were only 22 percent of those surveyed who said that they remained strongly vegetarian while under the influence, saying standards were dropped ‘rarely’.
Those who faltered after a drink were certainly ashamed of it, with 69 percent confirming that they would keep their meat eating a secret. The author of the study, George Charles, did have some tips for those who gave into cravings. “I think it’s important for friends of these ‘vegetarians’ to support them when drunk and urge them not to eat meat as I’m sure they regret it the next day,” he encourages.
