The super chef is about to let fans get closer than ever before, writes Sarah Gamboni.
Heston Blumenthal is about to share an inside look into the incredible temporary relocation of his three Michelin-starred restaurant, The Fat Duck, from Bray to London.
A new four-part documentary follows Heston Blumenthal and his team as they relocate everything – including every piece of crockery and cutlery, plus 50 staff members and their families – for a six-month stint, and simultaneously managed a refurbishment of the historic Bray site.
“There were moments of exhaustion,” says Heston. “I had times where, when I was over here, I would do a working day and then at nighttime the UK would wake up. So I would then have to do the night shift for all the stuff that was going on in Bray.”
“We had a jigsaw puzzle on the wall here in Melbourne, and that jigsaw puzzle really was almost a metaphor for what I’d been saying in my head: I had this amazing puzzle but a bit was missing,” says Heston. “I’ve had to follow my gut instinct, and over that period of splitting time between the UK and Melbourne the jigsaw puzzle started to come together as I threw out things that were cluttering the bigger picture.”
Now back in the revamped Bray, Heston can reflect on his time in Melbourne, and the effect the experience had on him and his crew.
“The team were taken out of their comfort zone and it gave us a great opportunity to look at the whole offering with fresh eyes,” says Heston.
“Without a doubt, we were all impacted by the warmth, the kindness and enthusiasm of the Australian people. We will always carry that in out hearts, and now that we have Dinner by Heston permanently located in The Crown Towers, I have a permanent connection with the city… as if I needed more excuses to return.”
Screening on SBS over four weeks from Thursday 31 March, Inside Heston’s World offers a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse into the mind of this culinary whiz, and the workings of his world-famous restaurant.
