There’s an opening at The Firm. Words by Lindy Alexander.

While the opportunities are running out for you to become part of the royal family, it’s possible that we’ve found the next best thing.

The Royal Household has advertised for a full time, permanent Demi Chef de Partie. Demi chefs are usually in charge of particular areas of a kitchen such as pastry, fish, vegetables and so on. It’s a live-in role, which means the successful candidate will be provided with accommodation at Buckingham Palace (and at times, “another Royal residence”), though we think it’s safe to say the sleeping quarters are likely to be some distance from the royal family’s bedchambers.

You wouldn’t expect anything less, but the advertisement states, “this is no ordinary Demi Chef de Partie role”. If successful, you’ll be preparing dishes for “receptions and state dinners as well as staff lunches” (the ad also states that meals are included, but let’s face it, as an assistant to the executive chef, there’s a strong chance you’d be making your own supper).

The advertisement goes on to say that “standards are exceptionally high here, and every day is busy, so you’ll need to be an ambitious and qualified chef.” While the royal house is seeking a chef with experience in a “premier kitchen or volume catering,” this isn’t absolutely crucial. “We’re more interested in your ability and enthusiasm to deliver across all four sections of kitchen,” says the advertisement.

Perhaps surprisingly for a role of this kind, the salary is only £21,151.88 per annum (around $38,500), including 15 per cent employer contribution.

The application process is open until May 24, so perhaps it’s worth looking at what’s going to be on the menu for the impending royal wedding before you decide if you’re up to scratch.
