Remember rainbow bagels? Meet their cheesy, high-calorie competition.
The rainbow cheese toastie has become the latest must-have frankenfood, and it’s the grilled, gooey colour hit of our dreams.
Hong Kong chain Kala Toast, a dedicated cheese toastie destination, makes speciality toasties in a range of flavours. But it’s latest creation that has taken Instagram by storm. The multi-coloured snack comes after the global success of the raindrop cake, the square shake (see also: the freak shake), and their original predecessor, the cronut.

The cartoon colour comes from layered strips of cheese with surprisingly sophisticated origins: think flavoured cheeses – basil (green), tomato (red) and lavender (blue) – with a combination of gruyere, mozzarella, cheddar and Emmental.
“The basil flavour was the most outstanding one comparatively but the cheese flavour still was not as strong as my expectation,” said Hong Kong food blogger hkfoodiexblogger.
“It was also a bit oily in general. I would say the quality was rather average but we all cannot deny that it is photogenic,” the blogger wrote on Instagram.
