There’s a pattern emerging.
A day spent trawling one’s cookbook stash is a day well spent. But when you need a recipe fast, or you’re at the supermarket ready to buy up for tonight’s dinner, nothing beats a quick search of Google.
In 2017, beef stroganoff received the search engine’s crowning recipe glory, closely followed by hot cross buns and everyone’s favourite buttery accompaniment, hollandaise sauce. In fact, the whole list was comprised of retro classics like quiche Lorraine and shepherd’s pie. When it comes to matters of the stomach, it would seem that Australians like to kick it old-school.
Similarly, 2018 saw mostly classic comfort dishes from all corners of the globe searched for across the country, demonstrating our colourful, multicultural palate. We say ‘mostly’ because the most searched for recipe was indeed an anomaly.
In a bizarre twist, this year saw Keto recipes knock beef strog off the throne. That’s right, the carb-hating, fat-loving diet embraced by the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow and Halle Berry has apparently piqued the nation’s interest in a big way. We’re as shocked as you are.
Thankfully, it was closely followed by
- Beef stroganoff recipes, like this fast steak with stroganoff sauce.
- Chicken curry recipes, like this warming one by Darren Robertson.
- Frittata recipes. We love this fresh, herb-laden green frittata.
- Gnocchi recipes. We’ve got you sorted with this recipe collection of our favourites, including this pan-fried version with tomatoes and bacon vinaigrette
- Risotto recipes. Looking for inspo beyond the tried and true mushroom risotto? We’ve got 60 tasty others to try right here.
- Chicken soup recipes. Phoebe Rose Wood’s coconut chicken noodle soup is a game-changer.
- Fried rice recipes like this crowd-pleasing nasi goring.
- Omelette. For something new, give this Thai breakfast one a crack. (See what we did there?)
- Beef stew recipes. This beef cheek ragu is comfort food in a bowl.
Interestingly, the list is comprised of only savoury recipes, which would suggest that folks are still happy to turn to their favourite books and magazines for matters of the sweet variety. Either that or baking and dessert-making is becoming a lost art and being outsourced more nowadays (gasp). We’d rather believe the former.
As for the most searched for how-tos, it would seem that we all want to know how to make our own corned beef, followed by eggplant tofu and then beetroot and rice in the microwave. According to Google, vegetables are still lapping up the rockstar treatment, as more Aussies embrace a flexitarian lifestyle. Well, at least those not on the Keto diet.
