Earlier this year, the team at Twisties made everyone stop, rub their eyes, check the calendar to see if it was April 1 and look again when they announced the newest limited-edition Twisties flavour – raspberry.

In an unforeseen twist, this wasn’t just some misguided decision made by overstressed PR execs who had enjoyed one too many martinis at an after-hours brainstorming session. No, this was a choice voted on by the Australian public.

We, the people, were given three flavours to choose from: Cheesy Bacon, Cheeseburger or Twisted Raspberry. And somehow, Twisted Raspberry won by a landslide.

As any snack-food connoisseur like myself would know, there is only one Twisties flavour to rule them all: cheese. So it would be easy to expect either Cheesy Bacon or Cheeseburger to romp home in the voting stakes. Instead, it seems that Aussie chip fans are keen to move this classic savoury snack into a sweeter realm.

Well, a change is as good as a holiday, they say. And since holidays are expensive, this is a much more affordable alternative that could bring some zing into our dreary, workaday lives.

Described as having a “juicy, sweet and sherbert taste”, Twisted Raspberry Twisties have now been unleashed upon us, and will be available from today for a limited time. Will I be trying them? No. We Twisties purists do not sully our palates with such tomfoolery. But I look forward to watching other people have a go, so then I can point and laugh at them like that kid in The Simpsons.
