The benefit of boosting the intake of this ingredient is clearly rubbing off on Australian consumers.

With more people than ever turning to plant-based diets, it comes as no surprise that the latest Nielsen Homescan study shows a whopping increase in the sale of vegetables, in particular, Asian vegetables in Australia.

For the year ending January 2017, the Nielsen survey of Australian shoppers found that the volume sales for Asian vegetables – think, bok choy, Chinese cabbage, pak choi and choy sum, among others – jumped 22 percent on the previous year. This equates to a 17 percent increase in dollar sales.

Consumers in New South Wales and Victoria accounted for almost two-thirds of all Asian veggie sales and, interestingly, smaller (1-2 person) households account for almost half the volume sales. People are still heading to independent grocers to purchase their greens, but large supermarkets are also becoming an important source, with many of the country’s key chains reporting strong volume and dollar growth sales for Asian vegetables over the past year.

While many attribute the growth to the fact that Australians are increasingly aware of what they eat, and where it comes from, the popularity of Asian vegetables is also, no doubt, linked to do with the country’s love affair with Asian cuisine, and cooking it at home.
