How does a cafe at Canberra’s Old Parliament House introduce a new dish to its menu? With a democratic voting process, naturally.

Hoi Polloi had the public taste test and vote on 11 different burgers, designed by local food bloggers. The Full Yard – created in honour of former PM Bob Hawke and named for his famous world-record winning beer scull – took out more than half the votes. Watch out, Turnbull.

The all-Aussie creation piles grilled pineapple, beetroot, caramelised onion, plus the usual salad trim and chilli relish, on a milk bun with a beef rissole. The dinkum burger was created by local blogger Bec.

If you’re not down with brewskies like Bob, you could pair it with a Menzies’ martini, inspired by former Prime Minister Rob Menzies’ lemon-spiked recipe.

We think they could go one further and create an all-politician inspired menu. So we did it for them. For Malcolm Turnbull, we’d use top-grade wagyu beef with truffle aioli. Health-conscious Julie Bishop would score a a lean chicken breast burger with a lettuce leaf subbing in for the bun, and Bill Shorten’s, best known for his “zingers”, would come with extra chilli.

Julia Gillard’s would be a lamb pattie with mint sauce, inspired by her last-meal request of traditional roast, and given Kevin Rudd’s penchant for all things Chinese, a pork belly bao should do the trick.

And Tony Abbott? 100 percent, premium onion. Bun optional.
