Man about town Maurice Terzini takes his food as seriously as he does fashion, writes Amy Harris.
It’s hard to understand where Maurice Terzini – restaurateur, fashion entrepreneur and publican – finds time to plot any new projects. And yet, they keep coming. Earlier this year, he unveiled his first foray into the Sydney pub scene, the renovated Dolphin Hotel in Surry Hills. Now, the impresario behind Icebergs Dining Room and Bar and pizzeria hotspot Da Orazio Pizza + Porchetta is moving offshore.
Terzini will soon open a casual eatery in Bali. Da Maria, scheduled to open in November, is a sultry, beachfront restaurant and club serving seafood, pizza and natural wines. It’s the latest incursion by Australian restaurateurs on the island. Unlike some of his peers, though, Terzini already works regularly in Bali. His sporty fashion brand, Ten Pieces, is produced there. At the same time, a collaboration with Woolmark has him making frequent trips to Milan, too.
If that isn’t enough to keep his schedule heaving, Terzini and pal Giovanni Paradiso (of Fratelli Paradiso) are currently working on more Italo Dining and Disco Club nights, held at different venues across Sydney.
The next event takes place on October 13, with the cliff-top Icebergs standing in for the Amalfi Coast. As in previous years, Terzini and Paradiso will join forces for an evening of Italian food mixed with European cocktails and pumping house music.
Terzini says the night is inspired by clubs on the Italian coast. “You see these venues that aren’t restaurants, or bars or clubs – they’re all of those things combined,” he says. The Italo events recall ’70s and ’80s traditions. “Back then, people would go out for dancing, drinking and eating. We want to bring that back and elevate the fun.”
The soundtrack, meanwhile, will be courtesy of international DJs Mike Simonetti, based in New Jersey, and Stefano Pierozzi from Italy, who are both jetting into Sydney for the one-night only appearance.
