The future is looking bleak for some of your favourite foods. Read on at your own risk: depression awaits.
First it was bananas that were going extinct. That was bad enough. But now it looks like some of the really important stuff – chocolate and coffee – could be on their way out as well.
According to The Sun, increased temperatures in coffee-growing regions have resulted in fungi and pests impacting upon bean production like never before, with some experts claiming that coffee could be extinct by 2080.
Meanwhile, Swiss chocolate manufacturer Barry Callebaut has announced that cocoa supplies could be gone even earlier – as early as 2020. This is part due to skyrocketing demand: we ate 70,000 more metric tonnes of the stuff last year than chocolate producers were able to make.
It’s not just coffee and chocolate, either. Wine experts have predicted a global shortage of prosecco, again due to supply being unable to keep up with demand. Honey, too, is at risk, in this case due to the declining bee population.
Peanuts run the risk of becoming, if not extinct, at least endangered, due to severe drought in nut-producing regions. British experts have announced that a pork shortage looms, again due to drought, this time in Russia and the US.
Salmon are struggling to adapt to warmer water temperatures. Maple syrup production is being affected by climate change, too. And we know from experience here in Australia what the popularity of avocados means: price spikes, shortages, a little less of the ol’ green stuff on one’s toast in the morning.
It’s a depressing time to be a foodie. Why can’t these things ever happen to kale?
