We're quickly running out of the world's best cheese

Cheese

Run, don't walk if you want to try it for yourself.

Cheese lovers take note; the recently crowned world’s best cheese has sadly announced that it is already running very low in stock.

Fanaost, an aged Gouda-style cheese from Norway was announced the reigning champion at the World Cheese awards last month. It stood head and shoulders above its competition, beating 3,471 rivals from 41 countries thanks to its sharp flavour, subtle sweetness and intriguing texture. Jason Hinds of Neal’s Yard Dairy in London told The Guardian UK that the cheese “delivers a sense of place with a great texture and wonderful marriage of sweet and savoury notes.”

While fanaost is no doubt tasty, it’s also evidently hard to get a hold of. Its creator Jørn Hafslund produces the cheese on his farm 22km south of Bergen city. There his 12 cows (yes, just 12) nibble on 14 different kinds of grass across the mountains and fjords that surround his home. It’s this landscape which Hafslund believes gives the cheese its flavour “when I taste the milk at home, it is very sweet,” he explained of the key ingredient.

While this simple combination has proven a winning one for Hafslund it’s also proven a nightmare commercially. Despite increasing demand for the cheese worldwide, Hafslund is reluctant to expand which means that the next yield of fanaost won’t be available until the next European summer. We’d suggest those interested in tasting the current king of cheese get themselves on the next flight to Norway to avoid missing out.
