Cevapcici (Croatian spiced sausages)

Ingredients (12)

  • 500g beef mince
  • 250g lamb mince or pork mince
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • Pinch allspice or nutmeg
  • Pinch ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika
  • Pinch cayenne pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil, to brush
  • Warm pita bread, to serve
  • Thinly sliced onion, to serve
  • Lettuce leaves, to serve
  • Ajvar relish, to serve

Method

  • 1.
    Combine the minced beef, lamb and garlic in a bowl with the allspice or nutmeg, cloves, paprika and cayenne pepper. Season well with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, then combine the mixture well with your hands. Wet your hands with cold water and form the mince mixture into sixteen 8cm-long flattened sausage shapes.

    Heat a barbecue or grill to medium. Brush the cevapcici with the olive oil and place on the barbecue or grill for about 10 minutes, turning once, until browned and slightly crisp on both sides. Serve the cevapcici on pita bread with thinly sliced onion, lettuce leaves and some of the ajvar relish.
