The beaches will be barricaded and patrolled.
Following in the sandy footprints of Bondi, a number of major Queensland beaches will close tomorrow after hundreds took to the water on the weekend, ignoring social distancing advice.
Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has shut The Spit, Surfers Paradise and Coolangatta beaches to visitors.
To prevent access to the beach, car parks will be barricaded off and local law enforcement will patrol the area.
“Unfortunately, over the weekend, out-of-towners are descending on the Gold Coast in mass numbers and I fear that this number will increase over the Easter weekend,” Cr Tate said.
“We love you but we don’t want you visiting now. I didn’t want to do this but over the weekend, shows me, especially people visiting from Brisbane are not listening to us.”
The beaches will remain open to locals only, who are permitted to walk and exercise in the area in restricted numbers. Those who are not meant to be there or that do the wrong thing, will face fines.
The boundaries for the beach closures are:
- Coolangatta Beach will be closed from Greenmount Point to the Coolangatta Groyne.
- Surfers Paradise From Clifford St Tower 33 to South Narrowneck Tower 37 adjacent to Higman St.
- The Spit From Tower 42 adjacent to Seaworld to the rock wall adjacent to Tower 46
Local governments have repeatedly warned that if members of the public do not comply with regulations, they will not hesitate to close beaches.
