Explore the rugged beauty of the Byron hinterland at Amaroo Bangalow.
The Byron Bay region isn’t exactly lacking in beautiful views, stunning eco-luxury, and warm hospitality – but every once in a while, something truly special comes along to remind you why this stretch of the East Coast is such a prized paradise.
Amaroo is one such place. Owned and operated by business and life partners Cathy and Mike, the working farm and luxe retreat opened in late 2024, perched overlooking the valleys of Bangalow, a 15-minute drive from the centre of Byron Bay. The general ethos of Amaroo is an ‘alone together’ approach, prioritising romance and preservation above all else.

Preservation of the land – from the hundreds of hand-planted native trees providing sanctuary to native fauna – and self-preservation with the freedom of slipping off to your self-contained cabin away from the Pavilion, a communal gathering space.
A place for families, couples, and lovers, the real beauty of Amaroo comes from Mike and Cathy’s commitment to sanctuary. With four standalone cabins, plus a communal kitchen, dining and pool deck, whether you book for two guests or 10, the entire property is yours alone, meaning no small talk with strangers or hovering around pool lounges.

Natural wood finishes contrast with brushed metal frames with lived-in, unpretentious but lush touches throughout each space. Pared-back banquette seating, topped with supple leather cushioning, doubles as storage, secreting away outdoor game sets of croquet and pétanque. Eco-friendly Scandi-blonde wood panels contrast with heavy stone countertops and textural, tactile hand-made aquamarine tiles along the impressive cooktop’s backsplash.
Each element of Amaroo has been curated with comfortable entertaining in mind. Of course, you could whip up a feast indoors on the gas stove or double-wide oven, but we like to follow the call of the great outdoors.

A built-in pizza oven and adjacent barbecue sit between herb gardens and a sprawling lawn framed by jasmine-covered hedging and curvacious stepping-stone paths connecting each building.
Not that you’re likely to need them during the summer months, but at around 170m above sea level, keep the winter chills at bay by gathering around the firepit or while stoking the woodfire stoves crackling in each studio – perfect when paired with a glass of wine while your furry friend snoozes on their own provided pet bed.
