And it's set within the Great Barrier Reef.
For many, sustainable travel conjures images of ‘roughing it’ in less-than-luxe accommodation – where little thought is designated to design. And yet, this eco resort in Queensland’s tropical north is demonstrating that you can have your sophistication and luxury, while ensuring sustainability too.

And, when your accommodation neighbours the Great Barrier Reef, a resort that promises minimal intervention with its local environment is crucial in working toward the reef’s healthier future.
This month, Elysian will open on Long Island in the Whitsundays. Over the past year, the Sojourn Retreats group has renovated the structure formerly known as the ‘Paradise Bay Eco Resort’, which was severely damaged by Cyclones Marcia and Debbie.
Not only has the group reimagined the resort in new luxurious style, but it’s also received Australia’s highest ecotourism certificate for its commitment to sustainability.

Now, the all-inclusive retreat with a private chef, organic spa and aquatic adventure activities will operate off the grid (powered by the sun), produce minimal waste, and prevent excessive water, power and fuel use, while reducing emissions. In addition, the resort’s kitchen will use organic, locally sourced fresh produce. Guests can rest, in their comfortable rooms, assured by the knowledge the resort is doing its best to preserve its naturally striking surrounds.
