Slip away from the bustle and nestle in to this naturally beautiful bay on New South Wales' coastline.
Byron too busy? For many holidaymakers, finding a beachside town that balances the tranquility that sleepier seaside towns do so well with a decent handful of top-notch places to eat and drink is a fine line to straddle.
And yet, Shoal Bay in New South Wales seems to have hit that elusive happy medium – a place where luxury accommodation is neighboured by a selection of great culinary offerings. But, the crowds are left behind and natural beauty is still abundant.
Here’s how to make the most of a weekend in Shoal Bay:

Climb Tomaree Mountain
A steep (but not too tricky) climb up to the Tomaree Mountain summit will give you an vantage point from which to watch whales, and look out over the stunning scenery.

Watch nature at play
From the protected bay, you can not only watch dolphins play close to shore, but look out for the penguins who are known to visit too.

Have a drink at the Shoal Bay Country Club
A well-dressed spot to have a drink (and perhaps a wood-fired pizza), Shoal Bay Country Club is a favourite among visitors.

Pick up bread from Two Bobs Bakery
On your way into town, pick up some of the best (and prettiest-looking) sourdough you’ve ever sampled from Two Bobs Bakery – a small operation producing amazing breads.

Stay at Salt at Shoal Bay
Towering windows look out directly onto the mollifying waters of Shoal Bay from Salt. A fireplace warms swimmers after an ocean dip (as does a heated outdoor shower). Thoughtful touches are strewn carefully throughout and a large kitchen make’s entertaining a breeze.

Dine on the fresh, local catch
Pop over to Rick Stein’s restaurant at Bannisters, Port Stephens, for an unforgettable seafood meal, visit The Little Beach Boathouse for relaxed seaside fare, or stop into one of the casual eateries that hug the Shoal Bay coastline – from Thai to Italian.

Sip coffee in the morning sun
Inbibe a decent brew at Sandyfoot Cafe & Bar and soak in some sunshine, or sample the fare at InHouse Kitchen, for a side of interiors inspiration.
