Where to see the wildflowers in bloom in Western Australia

WA-wildflowers

Here's where the wild ones grow.

Ah, spring. At last, the earth laughs in flowers again – and colourful blooms swathe Western Australia’s mid-north west regions.

The western state is home to the world’s largest collection of wildflowers (more than 12,000 species) – 60 percent of which cannot be found anywhere else on earth. And those Western Australians sure know how to celebrate those petals.

This year, the state has released an interactive Wildflower Tracker, which also enables floral viewers to contribute their photos and recordings from their travels.

Western Australia Visitor Centre Manager Troy De Souza, says, “The tracker is updated regularly as reports of new flowers come in, so users have an accurate guide on where to find wildflowers across the season.”

In September, Perth becomes home to wild blooms, and by November the forests and coastal heaths of the South West are alight with colour.

Gene Hardy of – Cape to Cape Explorer Tours Managing Director – runs tours of the Cape to Cape Track in the Margaret River region. Here, more than 8,000 species of wildflowers and 300 species of orchids spring to life between August and November. Luxury Outback Tours, ADAMS Pinnacle Tours and Outback Spirit Tours also run wildflower tours.

During the wildflower season, a large number of festivals and events fill Western Australian candles. From August 24 to September 15, the Chittering Spring Festival takes place, while the entire month of September marks the Kings Park Festival to celebrate the blooms. The Ravensthorpe Wildflower Show & Spring Festival runs from September 9 to 21, and the Bloom Festival from September 21 to October 20.
