Fancy a sleepover with an echidna?
Thoughts of camping out among wild animals might conjure thoughts of African safaris (or school camps) for most. But, from October 10, Sydney’s own zoo with a view will open its Wildlife Retreat.
Overlooking Sydney Harbour, the new eco-retreat at Taronga Zoo affords its guests a chance to sleep among the wildlife. But this is no borderline camping trip – the new accommodation is every bit luxurious. Better yet, the accommodation will help support conservation projects to protect Australia’s animals.

Awake to the sounds of lyrebirds calling, platypus splashing about, koalas munching on gum leaves or echidnas ruffling in leaves as they amble about. While you’re there, you can also opt to join a guided tour with knowledgable guides.
On site, the Cox Architecture-designed retreat features five environmentally sensitive lodges with 62 rooms and suites overlooking wildlife habitat – and many boast views of the harbour beyond.

The Wildlife Retreat at Taronga opens to guests from Thursday 10 October 2019. Rates start at $790 per night for two adults and includes two-course dinner at Me-Gal restaurant, buffet breakfast, immersive and exclusive Australian animal experiences and complimentary general admission to Taronga Zoo. For more information and to make a reservation, visit taronga.org.au/retreat.
