Big call for a state with a quaint reputation.
Tasmania is a state that has a reputation equally built on its produce as much as its natural landmarks. A burgeoning food scene and growing awareness of its stunning (and certainly Instagram friendly) landscape has made it one of the most popular Australian destinations to visit in recent years. But what’s a memorable holiday without memorable accommodation?
And when it comes to Tasmania, you may as well indulge in something as picturesque as the land in which it sits. Enter Red Feather Inn.

The hotel
The luxe B&B sits in Hadspen, 15 minutes outside of Launceston city centre. It’s a sleepy collection of Georgian buildings that once served as a jail and accompanying officers’ quarters. Now the historic handful of dwellings have been transformed into a country chic collection of rooms and cottages, settled around a secluded garden with a statement-making weeping willow in tow. Each cottage acts as a private dwelling for the privacy and peace and quiet of visiting guests. As a bonus for those who value their quiet time, a number of which don’t allow children under the age of 16.

There are eight different accommodation options to choose from, including the Watchhouse cottage, Murphett’s cottage and Pearce’s cottage. The standout would have to be the latter – a petite den to call your own that offers two luxury queen rooms with ensuite bathrooms and one single split room with shared facilities (sleeping six people altogether). It comes complete with a sitting and dining room, leafy private garden, fully equipped kitchen with butlers sink and laundry, off street parking, air-conditioning and (when Tassie winter hits) gas log heating.
French Provincial-inspired, Red Feather Inn is the definition of country chic. Rooms are decorated in delicate white linens, awash with whites, creams and beige. The neighbouring gardens are pristine, and overflowing with roses, lavender and the like.

Surrounding activities
Launceston itself may not be a booming metropolis, but the leading city in Tasmania’s north is a hub of burgeoning foodie venues. For those who wish to venture further afield, the revered Tamar Valley is a short drive away. The rolling hills of the district are not only picturesque, but home to a collection of much-loved vineyards, ranging from the petite Stoney Rise to the impressive Tamar Ridge and must-do lunch spot Josef Chromy.
As a bonus, Red Feather Inn itself is home to a renowned cooking school. The class calendar changes monthly, and ranges in offerings from the traditional (butchery and sausage making included) to the contemporary (like cooking vegan).

Check-out rating
If a country escape is on the cards, there is no better place to lay your head than Red Feather Inn. Secluded, leafy, and undeniably quaint, the b&b has all the right ingredients for a quiet sojourn in Tasmania’s north.
