Welcome to a whole new world of wine: a 40-minute drive (or short helicopter ride) from Canberra airport.
It’s likely that those who love a fine drop have considered a wine-oriented weekender to the likes of the Barossa Valley, but outside the obvious grape-growing districts a new world of award-winning wine awaits.
From Canberra Airport, a leisurely 40-minute drive (or, a slightly more thrilling 15-minute helicopter ride) will take you to the sprawling vine-swathed land that’s home to Shaw Vineyard Estate.

Between the vines and golden paddocks (where you might spot sculptural artworks if you look carefully), a brand new cellar door sits proud – a concrete beacon of wine-tasting temptation.
The family owned winery is nestled in the heart of Murrumbateman, in the Canberra wine region. And, like all good vineyards, this one come’s with a very adorable resident wine pup.

But this is no low-key set-up. In fact, this year’s London International Wine Challenge crowned Shaw Vineyard Estate the winners in the category of ‘Producers of Australia’s Best Cabernet Sauvignon’ – one of the many awards that are beginning to weigh down the trophy shelves.

Its new state-of-the-art cellar door comes complete with a private tasting room, a large tasting area perfect for pop-ins, and a lounge area where you can look out over the naturally beautiful surrounds. Downstairs, a clandestine private tasting cellar awaits those who wish to book for a special occasion or event.

On site, a relaxed restaurant by the name of Olleyville serves up delicious, hearty, feel-good food – accompanied, of course, by delicious wines. Head chef Anthony Davis’s menu is warming, comforting and flavoursome at once.

Accommodation is nearby, with the newly opened Abode a short drive (or, for some, a cycle) away. Those road-tripping to the estate have the option of charging their electric cars, or hitching a helicopter ride back to town.
And yet, if you can’t make it to the estate in the near future, wines are also available via the company’s website.
