Special occasion on the cards? Gather your people on a private Island off Tasmania where penguins are regular visitors.
Whether you’re in need of some nature, the ultimate family holiday or a photogenic getaway with friends, sweetly named Picnic Island is the ultimate setting for a private, off-the-grid retreat.

The island sleeps only ten guests in its new rustic-style lodge, which comes complete with a warming suspended fireplace and cosy bedrooms with unrivalled views of the naturally picturesque backdrop.

Beyond the lodge’s timber walls, wildlife is in abundance – including seafood beneath its pristine waters, which guests can dive for. Abalone, mussels, sea urchins, squid, crayfish and scallops are at your doorstep, for those willing to brave the cool water.

Large groups of families call Picnic Island home. Hundreds of penguins, dolphins, seals and whales are regular visitors too.

The island is completely off-grid – solar power and environmental waste treatment systems are employed here.

Privately owned by the Newton-Brown family, the island was once the family’s private camping spot – but is now open to those needing a little rest and relaxation away from the hurried pace of life.

The price? For $1470 per night, you’ll get water taxi transport to the island (it’s only 800m offshore from Freycinet National Park on Tasmania’s East Coast), and an entire island to yourself (and nine guests).

And, if you can bear to part with the isolation, you can hop on the water taxi and head to Wineglass Bay for kayaking trips, hiking adventures and local winery visits.
