Sydney harbour may have many an accommodation option gracing its banks, but none sit smack bang in its middle. But that’s set to change with a new hotel popping up on the harbour’s Cockatoo Island. The UNESCO World Heritage Site has just introduced a petite accommodation option in the form of a pop-up event called Contained. Shipping containers have been granted a new lease on life in the venture, which transforms former crates into bespoke suites complete will all the luxuries you could ever dream of. A queen-sized bed, air conditioning, an exterior deck with loung furniture, room service, a shared plunge pool and restaurant access have all been included. Rates start from $305 Monday through Thursday, with booking available online. Contained will sit on the Island’s Bolt Wharf – an activity hub that will also house a restaurant and bar, event space and urban farm, alongside its accommodation option. The restaurant will be dubbed Don Tapa and will combine South American and traditional Australian produce with Indigenous flavours. Powered by the onsite Urban Farm, the dishes are designed to be shared and washed down with delicious wines, beers and cocktails. The Contained concept is not reserved solely for Cockatoo Island but has made its way there from Perth. It’s creators Anatoly Mezhov and Irene Polo previously created a similar luxury boutique accommodation named The Mantle, an activity hub in the East End of Fremantle. “We’re excited to bring this pop-up hub to Cockatoo Island and Sydney, which is an extension and a new take on our successful hub in Fremantle. It’s an opportunity for people to escape to Cockatoo Island to experience great food, innovative farming & bespoke converted container structures, unwind and explore the Island’s incredible cultural and historical features,” says Mezhov.
