The Wentworth Avenue factory, which was once the site of one of Australia’s first ceramic kilns, is being transformed into a 264 room hotel, with a ground floor restaurant, bar and cafe, along with a rooftop restaurant and bar.
First look: Surry Hills will soon be home to Australia's first Ace Hotel
Surry Hills’ historic Tyne House brick factory will soon be home to the southern hemisphere’s first Atelier Ace hotel, with the opening of Ace Sydney slated for early 2022. Photography by Anson Smart.
The neighbourhood
The neighbourhood has long served as a home to the most trailblazing and resilient voices of modern Australia. From the razor gang wars and underground liquor trade of the 1920s and 1930s, the modernist art boon of the 1960s and through to the Gay Solidarity Group protests of the 1970s.
The design
The hotel group tapped Melbourne-based Flack Studio as their primary design partner to realise the distinctive modernist aesthetic of Ace Hotels in a uniquely Australian way.
The interiors
Taking inspiration from the neighbourhood’s rich history and the warm, cinematic colour palette of the Australian landscape to create a space that contrasts the city’s significant eras and evolutions with natural textures and tones, and organic materials. Many of the property’s furnishings, artworks and interior details have been uniquely created or custom designed for this project, including guest room furniture, joinery and lighting.
The background
Ace was founded in Belltown, Seattle in 1999, with current locations in Seattle, Portland, New York, Palm Springs, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, New Orleans, Chicago, Kyoto and Brooklyn. Ace Hotel Sydney and Ace Hotel Toronto are both due to open in early 2022.
