This little Canberra cafe serves up some surprisingly sophisticated brews from espresso to aeropress, cold brew, iced lattes and espresso tonics, made using these beans. Without a proper kitchen, bar managers Jack Muirhead and Angus Raddon have made the most of benchtop space, with a short menu based around sandwiches, rice bowls and fancy things on toast. Hidden away bar with great food and great cocktail and killer wine list. The vibes at Bar Rochford are seriously some of the best in the country. If you go there late, they have a live DJ that plays till close, and it starts to get pretty wild as the night goes on. First Floor, 65 London Circuit.
Morks restaurant is so underrated. The flavours of the food are punchy and fresh, authentic Thai flavours using Australian produce. Go-to dish is poached chicken, mustard leaf and noodles with a delicious curry sauce. And, the fried ice-cream (pictured). 18/19 Eastlake Parade, Kingston.
Gus of eightysix knows how to work a floor, with buzzy vibes, a great wine list and really tasty food. Make sure you stay for desserts! The banoffee pie is a favourite. Corner of Eloura and Lonsdale Street, Braddon.
When it comes to pizza in the nation’s Capital there’s Italian and Sons first and daylight second. Served in the restaurant proper or the wine bar Bacaro at the rear, it’s a fluffy, charry, slice of joy. The potato, taleggio, pancetta and rosemary will alter your perceptions of spuds on a pizza while the Puttanesca is hands down the best iteration we’e seen down under that lets olives, capers, anchovy, oregano and reggiano sing.
