It may well be Wategos that gets all of the attention, but Byron boasts plenty more beaches to choose from, including a handful that aren’t yet on the radar of most visitors. Like the protected bay of Whites Beach, just outside of Broken Head on the outskirts of town. Sheltered by rainforest and cliffs, and accessible by a rock-based staircase, Whites is a dreamy place to escape the crowds.

An easy day trip from Sydney central is Royal National Park, which plays host to Wattamolla Beach and Falls. With a beach, lagoon, cove, and waterfalls at its fingertips (not to mention an adjoining picnic area and access to bushwalking trails), Wattamolla is a firm favourite among families.

Not too far from the famous white sands of Hyams Beach in Jervis Bay sits Green Patch Beach. Tucked into Booderee National Park, it’s just as beautiful as some of its famously pristine neighbours but far less busy. While its protected waters make Green Patch great for a dip, its location also makes it a dream snorkelling destination so pack your flippers.

With seclusion in spades is the hidden gem of Resolute Beach, a sandy stretch which sits tucked into the West Head area of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. It’s not just the green-hued waters which will tempt you here but the equally stunning views of Pittwater.

On the cusp of the Queensland border lies the quaint community of Fingal Head where the resident lighthouse sits wedged between its two beaches – Fingal Head and Dreamtime. Thanks to the latters position it tends to escape the pesky northerly winds which frequent the east coast at summertime, plus the headland creates a sheltered corner and accompanying lagoon in which kids can frolic all day long.

It’s in the fishing village of Port Stephens, not far from Newcastle, where you’ll find the community of Anna Bay. Not only is this place the getaway to the immense Stockton Bight Sand Dunes and Worimi Conservation lands, but plays host to a beautiful patrolled surf beach with plenty of rock pools equally worthy of an explore.

Not all of Sydney’s beaches are as world-famous as the likes of Bondi or Coogee. Little Bay is a secluded spot that sits further south in Randwick Shire near Maroubra and tends to be frequented by locals. It’s favoured for swimming, snorkelling and fishing thanks to being flanked by steep rock ledges.

There are plenty of reasons to visit Cronulla these days, with Salmon Haul among them. While lesser-known, this place is much adored as a swimming spot by locals but it’s unpatrolled so be warned before you make your way into the water. There’s more rock than beach here but it makes for good fishing and snorkelling potential.

In addition to the stunning views of Sydney Harbour and protected crystal clear water on offer at Murray Rose Pool, the facilities here make this a perfect spot for families. There’s a pontoon for older kids who crave adventure and want to jump into the water, a kiosk if you don’t fancy packing food, toilets, showers and change room facilities, so you ensure sandy feet don’t transfer to the car.

A favourite among locals, Chinamans Beach is one of Sydney’s best kept secrets. Rosherville Reserve sits before the tiny beach, so it’s not visible from the road, which is why often people drive by without spotting it. The soft white sand, still waters and large shaded grass areas makes this one perfect for those who have tiny tots in tow.
