Bullo River Station sits on the edge of the remote Kimberley in the northwest corner of the Northern Territory. It’s about as far away from the big smoke as you kind find yourself; a working cattle station with a passion and commitment to environmental and indigenous conservation. Currently the station manages a herd of 4,000 strong Brahman-cross herd across half a million acres; a task which guests will be all too involved in during their stay. Alongside a handful of other outdoors-y activities that is.

In the 1960s a pastoral lease for Bullo River Valley Station was granted, transforming the property into a viable cattle station. The original homestead and station has expanded and modernised over the years but the surrounding district remains largely unchanged (which means perfect for both getting your adventure on and accompanying Instgram). The homestead is today a guesthouse, surrounded by terrain in which you are able to explore on four-wheel drives, all-terrain vehicles or horseback. Guests can assist with bore checks, lick runs and cattle yard work. There’s also poddy calves to be fed and muster training to do.

A stay at the station is a chance for city slickers to step away from the city and get back in touch with the country’s agricultural roots. Outside of assisting in managing the station, guests are able to spend the day exploring the surrounding landscapes, swim in remote waterholes and waterfalls, go barramundi fishing and have a gander at local Aboriginal rock art and wildlife.

The homestead contains 12 guest rooms, each decorated in ode to the surrounding landscape and equipped with king or twin-beds, air-conditioning and modern ensuites. Outside sits a pool and hammocks hitched up between palm trees for guests to also enjoy. For those after something a little more decadent, there is the Cliff Top Room option. Accessible only by helicopter are a handful of huts perched high up on the ridge line. Each contain a king size bed, shower and toilet, and boast not only complete privacy but views out onto a private lake where cattle, buffalo, birds and wildlife frequent.

There’s a comfortable communal area within the homestead where freshly baked goodies are made readily available, and where you an indulge in a drink or two with fellow visitors to the station. Picnic baskets of fresh local goodies can also be arranged for munching on throughout the day by local waterholes and billabongs while you are out and about on the property. But dinner is best enjoyed back at the homestead; barramundi and prime organic beef from the surrounding pastures, served under the stars and by the light of a campfire.

Getting to Bullo River Station is no easy feat but it’s one well worth the energy required. Transport by car for Kununurra is 3 to 4 hours, from Darwin 9 to 10 hours, and from Katherine 7 to 8 hours. During wet season it’s required that guests access the property via helicopter or fixed wing aircraft, but air transfers can also be arranged throughout the year via the station team.
