Collette Dinnigan has unveiled her latest venture, an exquisitely renovated farm house in the New South Wales southern highlands town of Bowral, and we’d very much like to live there for the rest of eternity, please and thank you.

The heritage farmhouse is just minutes from Bowral
The first Australian designer to ever to show a collection at Paris Fashion Week is known for her flawless eye, impeccable taste and uncanny ability to balance elegance and effortlessness. So, when she takes on a project like renovating a heritage farmhouse in Bowral, you just know it’s going to be the very embodiment of chic.
Light soaked interiors meet subtle rustic details
Dinnigan has flourished almost non-stop since scaling back her fashion business in 2013. In fact, she’s established herself as one of the country’s finest interior designers, consulting for brands like Bannisters and Golf House, and renovating several properties in the ensuing years, including properties in Watsons Bay, Palm Beach and Milton.
Escape to the country in style
But it’s her latest project, Black Barn Bowral, which has set our housebound hearts aflutter and dialled up our already substantial weekend-getaway cravings to maximum wanderlust. And here’s the best part: you can now rent the Bowral property on Airbnb.
Renovations took eighteen months
“We were looking for a country property close to Bowral and fell in love with [nearby] Alderly Edge which had incredible views – and we fell in love with the barn which was used as an artists studio and for wood storage,” the designer told delicious.
Even the floor plan is charming
“It’s rustic luxury using many recycled and reclaimed materials,” Dinnigan explains. “I wanted it to be warm and charming. The floorboards are reclaimed Danish cheeseboards (used to store cheese). The doors all come from different places – some from Egypt, some Argentina. The light fittings I’ve collected from my time spent in Italy.”
Get cosy in one of three bedrooms
Ideally located just minutes from the town centre, the charming three bedroom, two bathroom farm house – which took a year-and-a-half to renovate – sleeps six. Lovingly renovated in Dinnigan’s signature done-but-undone style, it combines subtle rustic details and thoughtful modern touches to complement the original heritage architecture. It’s somehow both minimal and cosy at the same time.
Southern Highlands style
It is the kind of place you can easily imagine falling in love with and revisiting many times. Those whitewashed walls hold warmth and promise: steaming mugs of freshly brewed coffee, dappled afternoon light, lazy days curled up in the sweet spot where fireplace warmth meets fresh night air. It’s the kind of weekend escape you can imagine never wanting to leave. As for the best room in the house? “I love the top bedroom with the outlook across the paddocks, overlooking our neighbours donkeys,” notes Dinnigan. Sounds absolutely perfect.
