Whitewashed, muted and monochrome, fringed by palms and with a perfect circle for a pool, The Bower is so achingly beach sleek the realisation you don’t live here causes actual physical pain. Comprising of Bower Suites, Bower Barn, Bower Cottage and Bower House, the property was bestowed with the talents of an entire design team, from interior stylists to an architect, photographer and landscaper, to bring the visions of owner Taliah Lowry to life.
A travel guide that proves Byron Bay truly is a design-lover's dream
Nowhere does barefoot luxury quite like Byron Bay. With an aesthetic that borrows the best parts of beachside culture from around the world and blends it with a laidback Australian simplicity, it’s an irresistible lure for the design inspired among us. Here’s our pick from some of the most stylish options to bed down (in French linen, of course) during your stay. Words by Lara Picone.
The Bower - Stay
Set on an original Byron Bay property with established dwellings complemented by sympathetic new builds, The Bower can accommodate couples (in the barn and suites) through to groups of 10 (in the cottage). So beautiful and considered is the accommodation that motivation to leave the compound can be difficult to muster.
Raes
Raes is one of those places that spurs an irresistible urge to pose like the Insta-famous. Every carefully arranged vignette seems intended for models to artfully drape themselves over. Resist the temptation to digitally document and look outside, for Raes’ interior beauty is more than matched by its location on one of the world’s most beautiful beaches.
Raes Dining Room
If you’re not flush enough to sprig for the full Raes experience, you can always sample this design-forward beauty by booking in for dinner at Raes Dinning Room. The 50-seat restaurant is one of the best in town, and it needs to be if the food is to compete with the magnetic view of Wategos Beach.
Bask & Stow
Minimal, fresh, and beachside easy, Bask & Stow is four elegantly designed suites aptly named Sun, Salt, Sea and Sand. Hanging chairs, soothing whites, and strategically placed cacti all culminate to make the ideal place to bask in the sun and stow your worries.
The House at Bask & Stow
An original federation cottage has been given a Bauhaus-infused upgrade to make The House at Bask & Stow. Three bedrooms, a full chef’s kitchen, timber floors, a plenty of comfortable corners to lounge about in, the house is an exercise in liveable design.
Barefoot Escapes
Owner of Sydney design studios The Designory and The Design Hunter, Melissa Bonney and her husband have set about creating stunning holiday houses. The first two are, of course, in Byron Bay. Doused liberally in Byron chic, The Bay Cottage is a three-bedroom beauty that will have you on the phone to your financial advisor trying to negotiate a seachange.
Barefoot Escapes - The Bay House
The second property in the Barefoot Escapes collection the five-bedroom, The Bay House, is set to launch this year. Few details are being released so far, but it’s earmarked to be groundbreaking in style, so stay tuned.
The Atlantic
Slip into the illusion that you’re a Byron local at the beautifully styled boutique hotel, The Atlantic. The compound includes four original cottages to choose from, Coconut Cottage, The Albatross, Little Palm and The Lodge, each styled with that effortless Byron aesthetic that fuses world influences with surf shack charm. One of the best features of The Atlantic is its enviable location right in town. It’s just a stroll to shops, restaurants and the beach, or swing a leg over one of the hotel’s Tokyo bikes and pedal farther afield.
Chupacabra
One cannot live on design alone, so when it’s time to leave your luxe lodgings for some tucker but you still want to surround yourself with Byron cool, head to Suffolk Park’s Chupa Cabra to liven up your tastebuds with authentic Mexican tacos and a cooling beer cocktail, called a michelada.
Barrio
Set in the new live, work, play development, Habitat, where you’ll find some of Byron’s best-curated stores, is the Argentinean-style grill, Barrio. The elegantly pared-back space has won an interior architecture design award for its clean lines and casual open setting. Don’t leave without trying the corn empanadas.
Bay Grocer
If you’re after some supplies to take back to your accommodation so you can hibernate in your chic room, the team behind Byron’s much-loved 100 Mile Table have just opened up Bay Grocer. Pick up some delicious produce and grab a bite to eat and a coffee while you’re there.
