Set amongst extensive gardens and orchards is Bilpin Cider Co, a cellar door, farm and picnic spot perfect for sampling a range of the 10 alcoholic and three non-alcoholic ciders on offer. Just down the road is Hillbilly Cider, a bohemian-style outfit known for their minimalist approach and delicious Sweet Julie cider (said to be the only cider using the Julie apple).

Grab an empty esky and fill up on seasonal fruit and vegetables, Irish soda bread, vegan treats, truffles, kombucha or salami at the Blackheath Growers Market. Make sure you stop by the Second Mouse Cheese Co stall for artisan cheeses made using traditional techniques with locally sourced milk.

If you’ve ever had visions of being pampered and treated like a royal, the Hydro Majestic afternoon high tea is for you. Overlooking the Megalong Valley, the Hydro Majestic is one of Australia’s most iconic historic hotels. Make sure you come hungry because a three-tiered silver stand – brimming with delicate pastries, finger sandwiches and freshly baked scones – awaits.

Travel the world in eight street food dishes, with 8 things in Katoomba where chef Misha Laurent turns out hot and crispy tofu fries (served with lime and sambal mayo), lamb shoulder tacos and Korean bao with pork belly. Or, if you’re in the mood for an epic all day breakfast, Anonymous Café in Blackheath is the place (we recommend the breakfast burrito with beans, rice, corn, chickpeas and a fried egg).

It can get chilly in the mountains, so for the best hot chocolate head to Rust and Timber in Lawson. Cassiopeia has premises in Springwood and Katoomba serving up excellent coffee, and for delicious toasties (try the Gruyere, mozzarella, mushroom, shallot and Dijon mustard), it’s hard to beat Springwood’s Dbl Ristretto. Finish off your day of eating with a slice of decadent black forest cake from Wentworth Falls’ German bakery, Patisserie Schwarz.
