Surry Hills has a reputation for being rather design-savvy, a reputation that’s certainly upheld by its latest resident Paramount House Hotel. 29 rooms and an atrium-style lobby have been crafted by Breathe Architecture from the space that was the former warehouse and offices of Paramount Picture Studios. It’s the first hotel from owners Russell Beard, Ping Jin Ng, and Mark Dundon who also run Paramount Coffee Project downstairs, and Bondi Hall. Nothing has been spared when it comes to aesthetics – restored ceilings, windows and brick wills interweave with fresh timber floors and terrazzo-tiled bathrooms. Each room accessorised with French linen sheets, Aesop amenities, Seljak wool blankets and artwork curated by local gallery and neighbours China Heights. Room styles vary depending on guest requirements, from Everyday, Sunny rooms, to Lofts and two Mack Daddy suites. Some rooms boast a Japanese-style timber bath, but all are treated to a thermos of filter coffee hanging on the door as a part of the accompanying Paramount Coffee Project’s breakfast and lunch room service. The building’s development doesn’t stop there, with a sister restaurant for local favourite Ester en route, and a Paramount Recreation Club and Kiosk planned for April.
