Reimagining a 1980s-built brick motel, Jess and Dave Frid, the creative team behind and owners of The Sunseeker have recruited Byron Bay’s best and brightest creatives and environmentally minded makers to ensure every design element selected and choice made has been carefully considered. Now, the once-outmoded accommodation is an aesthetically stimulating treat for the senses set on beautiful Bundjalung country.

The Sunseeker offers a choice between rooms and bungalow-style accommodation. Both options showcase the collaborative design efforts of the locals enlisted to create these special spaces – think sunshine-coloured features and vibrant furnishings, teamed with thoughtful ornamentation.

In recreating the old accommodation site, the team saved more than 2420kgs of concrete from landfill (working Five Mile Radius) on custom terrazzo bench tops. The site is powered by the 82 solar panels; there are water tanks that service the pool, garden and bungalows; recycled timbers have been use throughout and hemp insulates the bungalows; materials from the former rooms have been repurposed; and there’s a charging station for electric vehicles, among other innovations. Needless to say, disposable bathroom amenities are off the cards.

You can feel good knowing part of your booking is put toward charitable donations aimed at bettering the environment (including 1% For the Planet, Take3ForTheSea and One Bottle for Life). And, the team takes great care to ensure the community and its environment is supported – including its local artisans who’ve added their touch to the spaces. Travel devotees will be familiar with Byron local and interiors consultant Julia Ashwood – otherwise known as travel Instagram legend, The Vista – whose eye was put to use on this project.

On Bangalow Road, The Sunseeker is tucked away behind Tallow Beach, presenting a quiet sanctuary away from Byron Bay township’s bustle. Ask the team about surfboard and bicycle hire during your stay or visit the specially curated library designed to enhance your holiday experience.

Children will soon have access to complimentary scooters and skateboards to get around The Sunseeker, play at a nature-inspired playground, jump on a trampoline or shoot hoops. There’ll also be educational planter boxes (and Subpods™, which grow garnishes for the bar’s cocktails). There there’s the resident beehive, where kids can tap honey straight from the hive.

Not fussed on leaving your poolside lazing posi? Allow The Sunseeker to supply your snacking and meal provisions for you. The team has partnered with Bay Grocer to offer the option of stocking up your room with hampers, meal ingredients and more. There’s also takeaway coffee cart on hand, which also stocks pastries and mini baguettes, and a poolside bar where cocktails and biodynamic wines are available. Then, there’s snacks prepared on the hibachi grill.

The Sunseeker is additionally serving as an event space, which is open for enquiries. And, its website is home to an online store. Lila Theodoros of Muse Muse has cleverly conjured up the playful branding, which features on souvenir gifts available for purchase – think mugs, totes, tees and posters.
