Hobart is beautiful in the morning so we recommend venturing out for a stroll along the river, then follow the scent of freshly baked bread until you reach Pigeon Whole Bakers. Good coffee and the finest pastries in Hobart are just a nine minute walk from the hotel on Arglye Street. Pigeon Whole Bakers serve up hot-out-of-the-oven ciabatta, boiled bagels and sweet treats, like almond croissants.

If you’re in Hobart for the weekend there’s no better way to start the day than at one of its markets. Salamanca Market is just a short walk from MACq01 and has been a Saturday morning tradition for locals for 50 years. The outdoor market is set in Hobart’s historic precinct, Salamanca. Here you’ll find locally grown produce, handmade goods and more. Sunday mornings are reserved for Farm Gate Markets. You’re only allowed to run a stall if you are selling produce you have grown yourself, so it’s a given that everything you taste here is locally grown.

Whether it’s your first time in Hobart or your fifth, a trip to the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) is always a good idea. While located 11 kilometres north of Hobart, getting to MONA is easy. Jump on one of the museum’s high-speed catamarans – don’t be alarmed by the camouflage print, these aren’t army boats, it’s just part of MONA’s quirky attitude – and you’ll be at the museum in 25 minutes. If you’re feeling peckish there are plenty of dining options onsite to choose from before touring the museum. For a casual bite, Dubsy’s serves up fire-cooked, flame-grilled burgers. Perched at the top of the MONA site is The Source Restaurant where you can dine from a living moss and herb table and Faro Bar + Restaurant where you can dine on a Spanish-inspired five-course set menu. Do make note that MONA’s dining venues are only open from Friday through to Monday.

Unwind with a pre-dinner snack and wine at the just opened Ogee. From the owners of Sonny, a restaurant loved by locals, Ogee is located in North Hobart and is a Euro-style bistro and wine bar. Seating just 28, the cosy and popular venue only takes walk-ins so it’s best to get in early if you want to nab a seat without a wait. The wine list focuses on minimal intervention wines and leans heavily on France and Italy, with some Aussie wines in the mix. The bar menu features easy-to-eat snack food like octopus, olive and anchovy gildas and freshly shucked oysters.

There’s no shortage of freshly opened restaurants in Hobart. Peppina, on Salamanca Place, is a contemporary Italian restaurant found in The Tasman, Hobart’s newest and shiniest luxury hotel. At Peppina, chef Massimo Mele’s menu perfectly marries the finest Tassie produce with his Italian style of cooking, think handmade pasta tossed with locally caught crayfish. Divine! If you’re after something a bit more casual but just as delicious, grab a cocktail and a pizza at Ti Ama down at Battery Point.

There’s a few convenient options for an after dinner drink. Settle in at Mary Mary which is also located in The Tasman for an exquisite drinks menu that is all about sourcing local indigenous ingredients and artisanal spirits from Tassie. Or head back to MACq01 and beeline for The Story Bar where you can knock back a night cap at the bar or on the sprawling balcony overlooking Derwent River. A rarity on Mondays, Lucinda Wine Bar is open early in the week to keep you well watered.
