24 hours in Glagow: 8 essential places to visit

Glasgow

While steeped in history, Scotland’s biggest city also boasts a modern food and arts scene, making it a captivating metropolis, as Samantha Jones discovers.

8am: Go west

Get your caffeine fix at West End favourite Artisan Roast (15-17 Gibson St), where freshly roasted coffee arrives daily from their own roastery in Edinburgh. Pick up a pastry and take a slight detour to beautifully landscaped Kelvingrove Park (6 Professors’ Square) before brunch.

10am: Eat and be merry

Slip down to Singl-End (265 Renfrew St) and enter the below-street-level hub alive with colour and chatter. The menu covers everything from cooked breakfasts and homemade granola to baked goods and open sandwiches.

11.30am: Say yes to art

Check out an exhibition at GoMA, Glasgow’s Gallery of Modern Art (Royal Exchange Square). With four galleries and a rotating schedule of contemporary exhibits, plus the stunning 18th-century neo-classical building in which they are housed, it’s the ideal place to while away a few hours.

1.30pm: Set out on foot

Join one of The Glasgow School of Art’s Mackintosh’s Glasgow Walking Tours (164 Renfrew St). Led by current or former students, you’ll discover the works of innovative architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh and learn about his style and life.

3.30pm: Hang with the hipsters

Head to bustling Finnieston and secure a booth at The Finnieston (1125 Argyle St). Showcasing more than 60 gins, a sultry interior and a menu focusing on ethically sourced seafood, it’s exactly what you deserve after the walk.

5.30pm: As the sun goes down

Take a stroll down the River Clyde to The Hidden Lane (1103 and 1061 Argyle St) to browse the studios and arty boutiques, or hop over to stylishly retro Kelvingrove Café (1161-1163 Argyle St) for an expertly mixed cocktail.

8.30pm: Next-level dining

Make a reservation for dinner at Alchemilla (1126 Argyle St) and satiate with Ottolenghi-alumna Rosie Healey’s stunning Mediterranean-influenced plates that change daily.

10.30pm: End on a high

Check in to Malmaison (278 W George St) and finish with a nightcap in the Chez Mal bar, or head to your room for an indulgent soak in the tub, or simply to fall sleep in the plush bed.
