Calling all food and wine lovers. This article was brought to you by Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours.

From its extraordinary history and picturesque landscapes, to centuries-old winemaking traditions and bountiful culinary delights, Bordeaux is a place of legend and with good reason. This region is home to some of the world’s most acclaimed vineyards and important historical sites. And what better way to immerse yourself in the area than on a Bordeaux river cruise with every all-inclusive 5-star luxury amenity you could imagine.

1. City magic

The historical centre of Bordeaux has been revitalised in the past 15 or so years, thanks to a visionary city mayor. Wander under the beautiful medieval city gates and take a stroll along the banks of the wide and deep river Garonne, marvelling at the public art sculptures. Half the city is Unesco World Heritage-listed, making it the largest urban World Heritage site. At every turn there is stunning new modern architecture juxtaposed with its public 18th century squares lined with trees.

2. The town more beautiful than Bordeaux

It’s a big call, but many say the charming medieval town St-Émilion rivals the city of Bordeaux. Renowned for its beauty and the diversity of its wine (lots of its vineyards are Unesco-listed), you can celebrate the 2000-year-old history of wine at the exclusive and idyllic estate of Château Siaurac or simply wander the village’s ancient streets. Don’t miss exploring the mystical underground catacombs of the largest monolithic church in Europe – for many it’s a highlight of their time in Bordeaux.

3. Marvellous markets

The fortified harbour town of Libourne is a delight for foodies, as it has no fewer than three open-air markets a week. All the region’s specialities are on vibrant display: sun-ripened fruits, vegetables stacked high, freshly baked bread, spices, herbs, cheese, fish, fresh meats and salamis, and the region’s mouth-watering foie gras.

4. Wine time

This almost goes without saying, but if you’re looking for exceptional wines, Bordeaux is the place for you. Beyond every city and port are unique, historical vineyards all making and selling extraordinary wines. The Médoc region is the world’s leading red wine producer. Sample its finest offerings at the Château Gruaud-Larose estate, or cycle to Château Lagrange, featured on Napoleon III’s 1855 Classification, for a tasting.

But for something truly enchanting, you can’t go past one of the oldest winemaking establishments in the region – Château d’Agassac, which dates back to the 13th century. Evening concerts where musicians perform classical masterpieces, such as those exclusive to Scenic, are simply unforgettable.

You’ve never seen Bordeaux quite like this before

You can also venture into the Sauternes region for a tasting of the prestigious Château Guiraud dessert wines. Or if you fancy stretching your legs, there is nothing quite like cycling through the green rolling vineyards to the Grand Cru Class estate of Château Myrat for a tasting. But if you prefer your white wine doubly distilled, a visit to the fortified town of Cognac, on the Charente River is a must. The narrow streets are lined with beautiful 16th century mansions, but the true highlight is sampling the brandy at Rémy Martin.

5. Beach bliss

Europe’s largest sand dune, the ‘Dune of Pilat’, can be found in the French seaside resort town of Arcachon. If you feel so inclined, you can climb the 110 metres to the top for the expansive panoramas or simply sit on the golden sand and see if you can spot any of the flat-bottomed oyster boats out collecting the speciality for which the region is renowned. The little town itself is magical – Arcachon’s four quarters are named after each of the seasons, and the houses are colourful little villas with fine wood tracery, reminiscent of those from a children’s picture storybook.
