Dreaming up a big trip in 2019? Here’s our hotlist of where to go in the new year. Words by Freya Herring
Woodstock, New York, USA
In 2019, Woodstock is celebrating 50 years since the most iconic music festival of all time. So, naturally, there is going to be a concert of epic proportions going down. Plans are for it to be 1969 all over again, with a seriously high-calibre line-up. If you can get there in August, go. Even if you miss it though, the surrounding Catskill Mountains are super cool right now, with increasing numbers of breweries, distilleries and farm-to-table restos.
The Maldives
Once a tricky place to get to for Australians, The Maldives has become far more accessible thanks to the launch of Scoot’s budget flights to the tropical islands, stopping only once in Singapore. The famously expensive resorts are more affordable than before now – you can stay at the stunningly beautiful Lux South Ari Atoll for under $200 per head a night. It’s a luxurious, but also more relaxed version of the traditional Maldivian resort. If you want ultimate luxe though, stay at Lux’s new resort, Lux North Male Atoll, where a villa some 255m2 is all yours to enjoy.

Val d’Isère, France
Skiing destination Val d’Isère has undergone a massive regeneration over the past few years as part of its Le Coin de Val d’Isère project. You’ll barely recognise the place – the entire town centre has been redesigned, with heaps of new luxe accommodation and a run that now takes you right into the centre of town. Go now, before everyone else catches on.
Scotland
Scotland is having a bit of a moment. The world’s leading design institution, the Victoria and Albert Museum, opened its first museum outside of London last year in Dundee, designed by starchitect Kengo Kuma, which has led to a regeneration of the post-industrial city. The whisky industry is also booming, with 20 new distilleries opening in the last two years (and 20 more to open by 2020). Chic hotels, especially in the country’s northerly climes (Grandtully, Kyle House, Fife Arms, we’re looking at you) are currently opening at superspeed to meet demand.

Normandy, France
You might have seen images of an island capped with a castled town on your Instagram feed. That’ll be Mont-Saint-Michel in France’s Normandy, and all of a sudden Normandy is on everyone’s bucket list. From incredible cider; soft, rich cheeses and a unique culture, get there before the tourists completely take over (the 30th anniversary of the Rouen Armada is on in June if gorgeous old ships are your bag).
Turkey
Turkey has had a rough few years in tourism, but thankfully the tides are now changing as more and more, tourists realise that the far west coast of Turkey is safe as houses – some 1000km from the Syrian border. The glittering, turquoise Aegean Sea is a sight to behold, and once you get away from the tourist trap of Bodrum, you’ll find yourself in one of the prettiest places on earth. Daytrips out to breathtakingly pretty Pamukkale hot springs is a must.
