A chance detour along a country lane led two sisters to La Saracina, an old Tuscan farmhouse transformed into a charming guesthouse. We sent Alison Pickel along for the tour.
Along a cypress-lined drive, on top of a green Tuscan hill, sits an old farmhouse called La Saracina. But this is no ordinary farmhouse. The stables have been transformed into six beautifully appointed bedrooms and given a second life as a guesthouse run by sisters Simonetta and Gabriella Vessichelli. It’s where guests can relax under an ancient almond tree or a pergola by the pool and take in stunning views over the valley.
It was 15 years ago that a serendipitous detour along an unmarked road near the town of Pienza led the Vessichellis to the farmhouse, already converted into a B & B by an American couple. “We’d only recently finished school, but two months later we were running it – without a hotel management course, without any experience, but with a lot of love and passion,” says Simonetta. “From that moment, La Saracina became our life.”
That love and passion extends to food, too. La Saracina’s guests are welcomed with Italian-style breakfasts, cantucci biscuits and strawberry crostata. The sisters also organise cooking classes with the help of local chefs. “We encourage our guests to try authentic, simple Tuscan dishes,” says Gabriella. These may include pappa al pomodoro, a peasant-style bread and tomato soup, and pici all’aglione, a hand-rolled pasta resembling thick spaghetti served with a tomato and garlic sauce.
Beyond the kitchen, there’s also plenty to explore. “We like to help our guests discover this magic land of beautiful landscapes, charming villages, famous wineries and great restaurants,” says Simonetta. Visit: lasaracina.it.
