This is Bangkok's best food market says chef David Thompson

Tropical fruits on market

The Long Chim founder reveals his go-to for dining and shopping in Thailand.

Considering David Thompson’s reputation as Australia’s leading authority on Thai cuisine, it’s a no brainer as to who to ask for suggestions for your next visit. The Bangkok-based chef is a regular to the Thai capital’s bevy of street food markets, but one in particular has proven itself a stand-out, and that’s Or Tor Kor.

“[My favourite is] Or Tor Kor hands down,” says Thompson of the lauded marketplace. “The pineapples, the durians, the charm of the stalls which are filled to the brim with Thai fruits which are the best in the world. Hands down, without question, irrefutably. [The fruit here is] when it’s ripe, they’re not picked to sit in cold storage for six months or more. The pineapples weep with sugar and I’ve cried for joy when I see them, while durian have that smell that grandmothers object to.”

And while Or Tor Kor is considered to be Bangkok’s best quality fruit and agricultural market, you’ll also find a bounty of street food stalls within, courtesy of its small food court. There you’ll be able to tuck into bowls of curries and noodle dishes, alongside Thompson’s favourite, the oyster omelette.

To get to Or Tor Kor market take the MRT to Kamphaeng Phet station and exit on the side opposite Chatuchak.
