It looks like it’s time for the foodies of the world to pack their bags for South America as Peru has been named the Top Culinary Destination of 2017. It’s not the first time that the nation has been named a food mecca either – it’s actually the sixth year in a row that the city has landed the illustrious accolade.

Since 2012 Peru has led the world in the culinary travel stakes thanks to its specialty cuisine that celebrates regional produce, particularly when it comes to seafood. Other countries also nominated for the award included Argentina, Australia, China, France, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Spain, Thailand, and the U.S.

“These recognitions are the result of the work we are doing to promote our tourism resources and our gastronomy,” says the Trade Commision of Peru in New York Isabella Falco. “These awards help to highlight Peru in the eyes of the world and we will continue to work to maintain Peru in first place, which contributes to improving the quality of life of all those Peruvians whose welfare depends on the growth of international tourism.”

While the leading drawcard for tourism in Peru is undoubtedly Machu Picchu, it seems that the appeal of the nation’s cuisine is not lagging far behind. 10 of the country’s restaurants now sit in the 50 Best Restaurants of Latin America list, including Virgilio Martínez’s Eater, which featured on the popular Chef’s Table series.
