An oyster-themed hotel exists in France, and even the spa treatments are all about these bivalve molluscs.
Whether you prefer them kept in their simplest, freshest state, or perhaps with a choice of topppings, oyster lovers would be remiss not to add this French oyster-obsessed hotel and its oyster-led experiences to their bucket lists. Welcome to Le Domaine Tarbouriech.

A small town that centres on a lagoon, Marseillan in the South of France (not far from Montpellier), is the home to an oyster-loving. family.

This family, over a short space of time, went from being oyster farmers, to oyster farmers with a tasting room that drew in many oyster-loving guests, to oyster farmers with a tasting room and a beautiful oyster-centric hotel. Here, guests can stand-up paddle board to sample oysters fresh from the farm and learn all there is to know about these slippery suckers.

Now, Le Domaine Tarbouriech is also the site of a spa that offers oyster treatments. This spa is a world-first to employ an oyster-themed method called L’Ostreathérapie. Inside the spa, therapists wash feet in oyster-shell-shaped basins, before using pearl-based serums on your skin.

From the manor’s decor to its oyster bar, the molluscs are never far from vision. Even its furniture has been created from recycled metal cranes that previously pulled out oyster cages. The family has even begun working with the University of Montpellier to develop supplements and cosmetics derived from the local pink oysters – which they conider a super food.

La Folie, the manor’s restaurant naturally serves up an oyster degustation ending in a scoop of oyster ice-cream.
We advise packing a copy of MK Fisher’s ‘Consider the Oyster’ for the flight.
