Partial to truffles? A flight to Italy is a small price to pay to indulge your palate says Renata Gortan.
At the International Alba White Truffle Fair, just two hours out of Milan, you can buy a white truffle the size of a small marble for just €10, or $15.
Black truffles the size of ping pong balls are only €60/kg compared to $2000/kg locally.
Alba, population 30,000, is the undisputed truffle capital of the world. During the 8-week fair it attracts about 600,000 people. Last year, 5000 of them were Australian. The €3.50 entrance ensures all truffles have been vetted.
Chat to truffle hunters, take your pick, bring it to a restaurant and have them grate it over a dish.

Truffles are comprised of up to 120 aromas, ranging from mushrooms to honey to hay. White truffles, which have a heady perfume and can’t be cultivated, are the ultimate prize for gourmands.
The Piedmonte region of Italy is one of the only places in the world they grow. This year, they hope to find 5 tonnes of the stuff and the best ones can fetch up to €4000 per kilo.
In Sydney, Molo is currently charging $10 a gram for white truffle from Alba.
Although the fair is only on until November 25, white truffle season run from September 21 to January 31 while the black stuff is found year round, except for May and September 1-21.
