The 12th-century Spanish monastery that's now a five-star hotel

Catalan

Once the humble farm home of Carthusian monks, who cultivated vines, olive trees and orchards at the foot of Sierra del Montstat, this 12th-century structure is now an elegant hotel.

We’ve just discovered another reason to return to Spain: and it’s shaped like a monastery. In the Montsant Natural Park, an hour and a half’s drive from Barcelona airport, a 26-room hotel has emerged in prime Catalan wine country with the help of the Vives family. It’s been christened Terra Dominicata and spans two lovingly refurbished buildings on a sprawling estate.

With respect for the original residents and builders, much of the original architecture remains visible – as does a winery where guest can learn how Priorat wines are produced. No two rooms at this hotel are the same, and each retains the character of its former life.

Cooking classes, wine tastings and deliciously prepared meals are also at the disposal of Terra Dominicata’s guests – who can opt to dine al fresco, or in the farm house, overlooking picturesque grape vines and Spanish countryside.
