Luxury cabins, free-flowing Champagne, unbeatable views.
“I have seldom heard a train go by and not wished I was on it,” famously said the travel writer Paul Theroux. Filmmakers agree with him – they’ve used trains to paint romance, beauty and adventure for decades (The Darjeeling Limited, Brief Encounter, the list goes on).
In recent years, long haul travel has made a comeback, with luxury cabins and high-speed lines making the idea of slowing down a journey more attractive than ever. Global travel pioneers Belmond are on board this idea, announcing that they’re releasing three new private ‘Grand Suites’ on their legendary Venice Simplon-Orient-Express next March.
Travelling between London, Paris and Venice from March to November and from Paris to Istanbul once a year, you’ll be able to see historic towns fade into rolling hills aboard the historic train, all from the comfort of your own luxury cabin.
Step back in time and into the golden era of travel as you soak up the luxury 1920s surrounds; each suite boasts private bathrooms with showers, double beds and a living area for maximum relaxation. London’s Wimberly Interiors are behind the one of a kind restoration – they’ll be completely transforming each cabin while retaining its history, renaming them after the train’s destination cities. And the designs reflect each: think hand-carved woods, embossed leather and Venetian glass.
Forget jet lag and cabin fever – the holiday starts with the journey when you’re travelling like this. Guests aboard the Paris, Venice and Istanbul suites are also treated to private transfers to and from the train, welcomed by a personal cabin steward who’s at their ready when they board.
All that’s left to do is sit back in your complimentary art deco bathrobe, champagne in hand, and enjoy the view – there’s no better way to see the world.
