The ancient city of Petra, famous for its carved rose-red sandstone facades, tombs, and temple, was turned into a world-renowned tourist attraction after appearing in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade in 1989. Petra, one of the seven wonders of the world, stood in for where Indiana Jones finds the Holy Grail.

The real Trapp family once lived in Salzburg, and the hit film was also filmed in and around the city, making it a must-see for Sound of Music fans. More than 300,000 visitors head to Salzburg each year to trace the footsteps of Maria von Trapp and Julie Andrews.

Although the majority of the Leonardo DiCaprio psychological thriller takes place in people’s subconscious, the filming locations are very real. The crew and cast hit up six countries on four different continents to capture it, with Kyoto’s Nijo Castle one of its most famous sets.

The fantasy land of Westeros spans several locations around the world. Northern Ireland accounts for many of these (there are plenty of tours you can join to visit the exact locations), from the Paint Hall Studios in Belfast to Tollymore Forest in Country Down. Scenes from Game of Thrones season one were shot in Malta, before moving to Croatia and Spain in later seasons. Scenes shot north of the wall, however, were filmed in Iceland. The newest addition to the GoT universe, prequel series House of the Dragon, filmed scenes at St. Michael’s Mount, a tidal island just off the southern coast of Cornwall in the UK.

See the real Grand Budapest Hotel in Germany’s easternmost city, the gorgeous town of Gorlitz, where the streets are a mix of medieval, Art Deco and Gothic architecture. Gorlitz was also where Tarantino’s Inglorious Bastards was filmed.

Anakin and Padme tie the knot at Villa del Balbianello, on the banks of Lake Como. From March until November, the villa is open to visitors.

The Hunger Games was filmed entirely in North Carolina’s rural and urban sites. NC’s Big Ivy Area, known to locals as Coleman Boundary, was District 12’s forest where Gale and Katniss hunt, while the DuPont State Forest was used for Arena scenes.

The cult Sofia Coppola film was almost entirely shot in two of Tokyo’s most colourful and bustling districts: Shinjuku and Shibuya. It’s in Shinjuku, at the 52-storey Park Hyatt Tokyo, where Bob and Charlotte meet each other.

“Meet me in Montauk” whispers Clementine (Kate Winslet) to Joel (Jim Carrey) as his last memory of her before their relationship is erased. Since the release of the film some 15 years ago, many of the settings are no more. Montauk’s Plaza restaurant is gone, just like Clementine’s dirty Williamsburg apartment, but fans of the film will find it hard not to think of it if ever they visit the Hamptons beachside suburb.

The award-winning musical, described by its producer as a “love letter to LA”, was shot in more than 40 locations around the city. Some of these include the SmokeHouse Restaurant in Burbank (where Mia discovers Sebastian’s piano skills), Cathy’s Corner on Mount Hollywood Drive (where the duo sing and dance through A Lovely Night) and the Lighthouse Café at Hermosa Beach.

You might be surprised to learn that the Netflix drama set up scene in a lavish townhouse neighbouring the real Queen’s home, known as Lancaster House. Other scenes were shot at the Ely Cathedral, and the stylishly art deco Eltham Place in South London.

Over five days, cast and crew filmed non-CGI scenes at Kauai’s Keahua Arboretum, a nature preserve surrounding the Wailua River.

Diehard Potterheads should make for the Oxford University, home to some of the most pivotal Harry Potter sets, including Duke Humfrey’s Library, with its floor-to-ceiling wall of books, the medieval-skewed Divinity School, New College Courtyard and Bodley Tower Staircase.

Off the coast of Naples, just 40 minutes from Capri, you’ll find the beautiful island of Ischia. Once your hydrofoil pulls up at Ischia Porto, it’s a 20-minute walk to the 12th century Castello Aragonese, where Matt Damon’s Ripley alights from the bus on arriving in ‘Mongibello’. The original 1960 film was also filmed in Ischia, at its swish, stunning Sant’Angelo port.

The makers of Slumdog Millionaire were criticized by many for the film’s sole focus on the gritty slums of the city. But it has attracted interest to Mumbai’s underbelly. Set for the most part in Mumbai’s slums, the film also features Agra, where Jamal and his brother become accidental tour guides, with that memorable closing sequence filmed in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus train station.
