Outlets

Say what you like about Aussies abroad, but one thing we know we love is a bargain. Hawaii is a hotspot for Aussies not just because of its glorious beaches, but also its outlet shopping – this is the place to come to get designer rags at discount prices, and don’t we know it. There are loads of outlets to choose from often with free shuttle services, but Waikele Premium Outlets in Oahu is one of the best. It’s a metropolis of shops boasting outlets from Armani, Calvin Klein, Barneys New York, Coach, DKNY, Furla and Tommy Hilfiger, among many others.

Design stores

Shops like Mono in Honolulu take influence from nearby Japan with a cleverly curated selection of beautiful objects and personal accessories. For independent designers, head to Owens and Co in Chinatown, Honolulu – they sell everything from books to tea towels and even clothes. Fishcake – also in Honolulu – is a must for its mix of furnishings and design pieces made by local Hawaiian designers, not to mention a whole range of artworks. It’s also got a neat café inside with darn good coffee to boot.

Antiques

Hawaii is jampacked with excellent antique stores – you just have to know where to look. Hound and Quail in Honolulu’s Chinatown specialises in the unusual so expect a surrealistic display of objects, such as taxidermy next to family crests and colourful vintage lamps. Over in Kailua, Kailua Pickers Antiques and Collectibles is a treasure-trove of bric-a-brac – if you’re willing to rummage. At Tin Can Mailman in Honolulu you’ll find everything from Bakelite jewellery and pinup girl posters to vintage can labels and Hula dolls.

Vintage

There are more vintage shops in Hawaii than you can shake a Hula skirt at. Honolulu is the hotspot. Barrio Vintage in Chinatown is one of the best boasting a cleverly curated selection of vintage threads with attitude. If you’re in Aiea – just northeast of Pearl Harbor – check out Old… But New for vintage clothing alongside delightful bric-a-brac and aged ceramics. Looking for the ultimate Hula shirt? Head to Goodwill Kailua and grab yourself a serious bargain.
