A former coastguard watch station, this coastal cliff top bothy in the northern tip of Skye enjoys stunning 180-degree views across the bay and Western Isles. There’s a pair for binoculars for spotting marine life, with minke whales migrating through the area in autumn.

Located on the unspoilt coast of Islay, this small bothy is as rustic and quaint as it is homely and charming. While the journey to get here isn’t easy, taking you over boggy and rugged coastal terrain best attempted at low tide, it will be well worth it once you get that fire going with a wine in hand.

Those that love a complete feeling of remoteness and seclusion will truly appreciate the wilderness that surrounds this bothy in the western Highlands. Following a fire in 2012, the stone bothy was lovingly reconstructed and restored, and features a typical but (kitchen area) and ben (bedroom area).

In a beautiful wild bay sits this old crofter’s cottage, standing out with its bright red roof and whitewashed walls. The typical but and ben layout downstairs can accommodate up to four people, but there is also an attic upstairs. Look out for otters, seals, deer and wild goats that like to come here to graze on the salty sea kelp.

Teetering off the edge of a cliff on the Isle of Lewis, this incredible bothy built into a cave with stone and wood, will make you feel as though you’re on the edge of the world. There are two tiny windows looking out over the wild Atlantic Ocean as waves crash down below, and a fireplace for staying warm on windy nights. This special bothy was built in honour aid worker Linda Norgrove, who was kidnapped in Afghanistan in 2010 and sadly died during a rescue mission.

Easy accessibility by road or rail and a beautifully rugged headland setting make this a popular choice among bothy enthusiasts as well as newbies. Located on the Ardnish Peninsula, the stone bothy takes in sweeping views of the secluded beach where you can gather for mussels during low tide to cook over an open fire.

Neslted into a bay secluded by towering cliffs, this bothy in the far northwest of Scotland is perfect for two. During the day, enjoy stunning beachfront views, and at night, fall asleep to sound of waves crashing onto shore.

Sitting on the edge of Fishefield Forest, Shenvall bothy’s spectacular mountain surrounds make it a popular resting place for hikers, especially in summer. It is the start and finish point of a hiking circuit, looping around the six most remote Munros in Scotland, known as the Fisherfield Six, and the landscape, particulary at sunset, is simply breathtaking. His Royal Highness Prince Charles was a visitor at Shenavall Bothy when he was a young student.
