A walled 15th century town of white and bright blue makes for rewarding photography as you wander through winding streets influenced by thousands of years of occupation. All that walking is sure to make you hungry for the fabulous seafood, tagines and paella served in the area’s cafes and restaurants – you’ll want to visit the medina more than once during your Asilah stay.

Although the name sounds like it’s a museum, the Cultural Moussem of Asilah is actually a festival where artists from around the world are invited to paint murals on the town’s whitewashed walls. The festival, held in July and August, also brings the town to life with concerts, exhibitions, workshops and performances. The area has long attracted creative people and many continue to call the tranquil seaside area home.

Packing lightly pays off for travellers to Asilah, where souks inside the walls of the medina sell authentic rugs, textiles and painted furniture. Paintings, silk slippers, sandals, jewellery and ceramics can be found at nearby Bazar Atlas, and market wares tend to be well priced.

If the good life to you is lazing on the beach, you’ve come to the right place. Asilah’s beaches range from crowded (especially in August) to rugged and remote. Walk, take a taxi, hire a horse and cart or go by donkey to the popular (but secluded) Paradise Beach, seven kilometres south of Asilah. The bustling main beach is right in town, if you’d rather not venture far.
